An accomplished neurologist, Frances Ames was the first South African woman to graduate with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cape Town.  She is also known for her human rights activism and was awarded South Africa’s highest honour from former president Nelson Mandela for her service in advancing the cause of human rights.
